What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common long term skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in your face.

The visible blood vessels are where there is an increase in blood flow through capillaries near the surface of the skin. It is commonly seen in the cheeks but it can also show across the nose, forehead and chin.

It can sometimes produce small, red, pus-filled bumps and appear angry. The skin may also sting or feel like its burning when using water or skincare products. People who have Rosacea can display symptoms as early as in their 20s, although it is more common between 30 – 60 years of age in both men and women.

Some find that there are some other symptoms that can come with this skin condition such as dry skin, swelling around the eyes and nose, sore eyelids and thickened skin after many years.

It is not known exactly what causes Rosacea but certain things can make the symptoms worse such as alcohol, spicy foods and exercise.

A GP may suggest a few options for someone who is suffering with this condition including the use of prescribed creams and gels for the skin, a course of antibiotics or an IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment.

There are a few do’s and dont’s that can help Rosacea.

Do…wear a high SPF of at least 30 every day
Try to cover your face in cold weather
Use gentle suitable skincare products
Avoid too much caffine
Avoid eating spicy foods alcohol
