Skin concerns – Acne

Some knowledge behind Acne…

Acne is a common skin condition that affects a lot of people at some point in their life. It is mostly seen in teenagers and younger adults but can continue into adult life and it can also appear to an adult even if they had not suffered with it as a teenager. It can develop on the face, back and chest area.

Acne can be made up of all or some of the following types of spot..

  • Blackheads – generally a black small bump, not filled with dirt but are black because of the inner lining of the hair follicle that produces colour. Commonly found around the nose and chin.
  • Whiteheads (milia) – have a similar appearance to blackheads but are firmer and will not empty when squeezed.
  • Papules – small red bumps that can feel tender to touch.
  • Pustules – similar to papules but have a white centre caused by a build up of pus.
  • Nodules – large hard lumps that appear under the skin that can be painful.
  • Cysts –  the most severe type of spot, large pus filled lumps, look similar to boils and cause the greatest risk of permanent scaring.

Acne is mostly linked with the hormone levels changing in the skin. The oil glands (sebaceaous glands) in the skin over produce sebum (oil) creating a greasy build up of oil and bacteria which blocks up the pores. The hair follicles also get clogged up by the excess oil production and a build up of skin cells. Acne skins can also be sensitive, red, painful and hot to touch.

Certain medications, diet and stress are also known to potentially trigger or aggravate acne. It is also known that it can run in the family, so if your parents both had acne then it is likely you will also experience this.

A GP will sometimes prescribe medications to help control and get rid of the acne and help prevent any scaring.
