Pregnancy Skin

Pregnancy can cause a number of different changes in the skin which is important to know about when wanting to treat it. This is due to the hormonal changes and the increase in blood flow.

It can be normal for the skin to look red and slightly flushed throughout pregnancy due to any extra weight gain which will increase blood pressure and move more blood closer to the surface of the skin. This can then cause broken capillaries and it can affect the tone of the skin.

It is also common for pregnant ladies to develop irregular brown patches over the face, commonly found on the upper cheeks, forehead, around the mouth and on the chin. This is usually known as ‘chloasma’, ‘melasma’ or the ‘mask of pregnancy’. These can appear due to the stimulation of the female sex hormone where the pigment-producing cells are stimulated to produce more melanin (dark coloured pigments) when the skin is exposed to sun light. This is similar to what causes brown age spots and freckles, but melasma patches tend to be larger. Because the increase in estrogen and progesterone and the melanin cells building more pigment it is also normal that any freckles or moles on the face could also look darker.

Due to the ups and downs of hormones during pregnancy this can also cause the skin to break out, it will overproduce oil leaving the skin shiny and sebum clogs up the pores. Typically the same characteristics as a teenage acne skin. The skin may also become more sensitive during pregnancy and products that were used regularly may now irritate the skin. This is again all due to hormonal changes.

It is important to not over stimulate or over treat a skin during pregnancy and we have a treatment that is targeted at helping to calm the skin whilst not causing further irritation and is safe to have whilst pregnant:
